Marshall was provided by Pearl in this very thread, "Trying Not to Give Peace a Chance."

I knew that I remembered it from somewhere!

Well, they say that it's the short-term memory that goes first, in this case, somewhere between this morning and this afternoon!Zeenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-974773076690597683.post-18585600802740195032014-04-26T16:09:36.060-04:002014-04-26T16:09:36.060-04:00@Jay--
Thank you for the link to the article &quo...@Jay--

Thank you for the link to the article "The West Marches East..."

The conclusion reached by the author, A.G. Marshall, is similar to those I have seen in other dispassionate analyses.

As I understand it, at the end of the Cold War, Russia thought that it had a deal with the West: If the West would be satisfied with its "victory" and end or limit its expansionary tendencies, Russia would live within its new boundaries and accept its somewhat reduced sphere of influence.

One gangster state making a deal with another...

Well, the West just couldn't leave it alone, almost immediately pushing for the inclusion of one Eastern European state after another into NATO and/or the European Union, to Russia's increasing discomfort.

And we're surprised when--having tweaked the Bear's tail mercilessly for 25 years--he finally turns around and bites us in the ass in the Ukraine?

What more could we have expected, having, ourselves, exhibited no honor among thieves?

Now, I like to tell myself that this confrontation in the Ukraine will, ultimately, end in some sort of peaceful "understanding," in which "face" is saved all around without firing any further shots.

But I'm sure that's what the Powers That Be Thought back in August, 1914, too...

Surely it couldn't happen again?Zeenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-974773076690597683.post-23108965450876645602014-04-26T12:25:51.320-04:002014-04-26T12:25:51.320-04:00There was a time when most of us read but one dail...There was a time when most of us read but one daily newspaper. Today, thanks to the problematic gifts of computers and the web, each of us cobbles together his or her own newspaper. The latter activity tells us (and the NSA) even more about us than when we regularly laid down a dollar at a newsstand for a copy of a “Wall Street Journal,” a “NY Daily Mirror,” or a “NY Times.”

If one persists, however, in habitually going back to the same old sources, like the “Times,” one should at least read on after an article into the Comments Section to get the whole story. To read a staff editorial (umm…) or Brooks (ouf!) or Friedman (ugh!) or Krugman (meh!) in the “Times,” but not the top comments, is to only get half of the story. (Note to self: Ask Karen to repost her recent comments from these sites.)

Today, in cobbling together my morning newspaper, I went by Truthout, where I spotted a long form article by one A. G. Marshall: “The West Marches East: The U.S.-NATO Strategy to Isolate Russia.” If ever you need the detail to back up the charge of NATO’s hypocrisy leading up to the Ukraine, see Marshall. His article appeared first on the website of the Hampton Institute, which appears to be another gold mine. And from the title of Marshall’s article over at the Hampton Institute it appears his article is only “Part I” with more to come. Would I have been richer or poorer spending the whole day with Lady Gray?

http://www.hamptoninstitution.org/west-marches-east-part-one.htmlJay–Ottawahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10360356126450612113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-974773076690597683.post-73932430624328337072014-04-25T12:07:59.864-04:002014-04-25T12:07:59.864-04:00A fascinating article by Ray McGovern about the hi...A fascinating article by Ray McGovern about the history of U.S.-Russian
relations and the Ukraine history in Truthout and why JFK was
assassinated.

Trying Not to Give Peace a Chance
> http://www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/23201-trying-not-to-give-peace-a-chance
Pearlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-974773076690597683.post-58231958350476934112014-04-24T18:30:37.602-04:002014-04-24T18:30:37.602-04:00Trying to strangle the Bear.
