They Got Flights

Surprise, surprise, surprise. Congress and Barack "Red Line in the Sand" Obama will only cancel the part of the sequester that inconveniences rich people. And just in time for the weekend, as they all blow town without waiting on the tarmac. Also just in time for the Hollywood celebs to blow into town for the horrific White House Correspondents Dinner after first blowing off the TSA security lines just because they can.

Don't get mad. Get even. And while we're thinking about how on earth we will actually accomplish that, here's a little ditty, sung to the tune of Johnny Cash's "I Got Stripes" (video here)

On a Monday, their flights got arrested (uh huh)
On a Tuesday, those plutocrats got mad (oh crap)
On a Wednesday, they found they'd been sequestered
On a Thursday, the Senate met and blurted out "Our Bad!"

So they got flights
Flights in all their Lear Jets
While we got chains
Chains around our feet (CPI!)
They got their rights
But we still got no jobs, yo.
And those chains, those chains
Are about to drag us down.

On a Monday, the kids still had no Pre-K
On a Tuesday, the cancer clinics closed (oh boy)
On a Wednesday, the Navy cancelled Fleet Week
On a Thursday, we still were getting hosed.

But they got flights
Flights in all their Lear Jets
And we got chains,
Chains around our feet (oh my corns!)
They got their rights
And still we have no jobs yet
And those chains, those chains
Just keep on draggin down.

On a Monday, they cut the AIDS relief off
On a Tuesday, the schools they got de-staffed
On a Wednesday, they even turned the heat off
On a Thursday, the politicians laughed. (hee-haw)

'Cause they got flights
Flights in all their Lear Jets
And we got chains,
Chains around our feet
They got their rights
And we still got no jobs yet
And those chains, those chains
Just keep....on....draggin.... d-o-o-o-w-n.

I can't even (and won't) try to add to your lyrics. But I think Pearl may be right - people are waking up, the great beast of the mass is stirring in its sleep. Can you hear it, you 1% ? It's mumbling in irritation at the liberties you've taken. You and your supporters have disturbed its narcotic slumber. It will awake hungover and mightily pissed off. Beware.

“We don’t need you anymore.”

Now more than ever the Dead Kennedys are relevant:

“We're sorry but you're no longer needed or wanted or even cared about here…
Doesn't it feel fulfilling to know that you the human being are now obsolete.
And there's nothing in hell we'll let you do about it.
Soup is good food (we don't need you any more)
You made a good meal (we don't need you any more)
Now how do you feel (we don't need you any more)
To be shit out our ass.
And thrown in the cold like a piece of trash…
Unemployment runs out after just six weeks
How does it feel to be a budget cut?
You're snipped. You no longer exist.
Your number's been purged from our central computer
So we can rig the facts and sweep you under the rug.
See our chart? Unemployment's going down.
If that ruins your life that's your problem.
Soup is good food…”
- Dead Kennedys, “Soup Is Good Food,”

“The worst crimes were dared by a few, willed by more, and tolerated by all.” – Tacitus

Libor’s twin brother?

Matt Taibbi, Everything Is Rigged: The Biggest Price-Fixing Scandal Ever:

“These banks, which already possess enormous power just by virtue of their financial holdings in the United States, the top six banks, many of them the same names you see on the Libor and ISDAfix panels, own assets equivalent to 60 percent of the nation's GDP are beginning to realize the awesome possibilities for increased profit and political might that would come with colluding instead of competing. Moreover, it's increasingly clear that both the criminal justice system and the civil courts may be impotent to stop them, even when they do get caught working together to game the system…

“The only reason this problem has not received the attention it deserves is because the scale of it is so enormous that ordinary people simply cannot see it. It's not just stealing by reaching a hand into your pocket and taking out money, but stealing in which banks can hit a few keystrokes and magically make whatever's in your pocket worth less. This is corruption at the molecular level of the economy, Space Age stealing – and it's only just coming into view.”

Triumph of the swill! Cesspools in Eden!

They got flights and we got chains:

“You're a chained-up dog fenced in a yard
Don't see much, you can't go far
Pace and froth, you're getting sick
Run too fast and it'll snap your neck
You say you'll break out
But you never do
You're just another ant in the hill
That's your Life Sentence”
- Dead Kennedys, “Life Sentence”

Just to set the record straight, the original song was "On [A] Monday," by Lead Belly.

Ry Cooder's cover is great, too.

Somethings to listen to while waiting for the bus.
